Mighty Jets F.C.

Mighty Jets International FC is a Nigerian professional football club based in Jos, currently playing in the Nigeria National League. The team plays its home matches at the Jos International Stadium, which seats 45,000.

One of only about six active privately owned professional clubs in Nigeria (meaning it is not owned by a state government), Mighty Jets won the Nigerian League in 1972. The club remained in the top flight until 1985. They have appeared in multiple FA Cup finals, including losses in 1972 and 1974, but the claim of ten final losses is unverified and likely exaggerated. The closest they came to winning was in 1972, when they drew the first match 2–2 after a late goal from Sam Garba Okoye, only to lose the replay 3–2 to Bendel Insurance. They also lost the 1974 cup final 2–0 to Enugu Rangers.

In 1994, the club was relegated to the third division, where it spent three seasons before returning to the second division in 1997. Mighty Jets’ most recent stint in the Premier League was a single season in 2004. They finished last in the 18-team table with 28 points (seven wins, seven draws, and 20 losses) and were relegated directly, with no promotion playoff involving them that season. During the 2004 season, the team played home matches in Jos, with no record of banishment to Owerri. With a new board of directors in place in 2016, the club is aiming for promotion back to the Nigeria Premier League. Several former Mighty Jets players now play in the Nigeria Premier League.

The club’s achievements include winning the Nigerian Premier League once (1972) and the National Second Division once (2003). In CAF competitions, they made one appearance in the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1973, reaching the second round, and one appearance in the CAF Cup Winners’ Cup in 1975, exiting in the first round.
