The story centers on Nyaruko, a formless Lovecraftian deity (Nyarlathotep) who takes the shape of a silver-haired girl. She saves high school boy Mahiro Yasaka from a black alien and explains that Lovecraft's creatures are alien races; she was sent by the Space Defense Agency to protect him from alien traffickers. Other Great Old Ones, including Cthugha and Hastur, become freeloaders at Mahiro's home.

The series began as a light novel written by Manta Aisora with illustrations by Koin, published by SoftBank Creative under GA Bunko from April 2009 to March 2014. Short stories appeared in GA Magazine. Multiple anime adaptations followed: a Flash OVA by DLE (2009–2010), a television series by DLE (2010–2011), and two television seasons by Xebec (2012 and 2013), plus a 2015 OVA. Two manga adaptations and a PlayStation Vita visual novel by 5pb. were also released.
