Early history
The band formed in 1988 during composer and drummer Edward Vesala's Sound & Fury workshops in Helsinki, led by saxophonist Tapani Rinne. Their eponymous debut album that year featured Finnish jazz musicians Raoul Björkenheim, Iro Haarla, and Seppo Tyni. The second album, Dance and Visions (1990), introduced Sami yoik singer Wimme Saari and new member Jari Kokkonen, establishing the group's trademark fusion of electronic music and jazzy wind instruments. This club-friendly sound caused confusion in the Finnish jazz scene and abroad. In 1992, RinneRadio released Joik, featuring Kimmo Kajasto, and Rinne received the Finnish Georgie Award for Jazz Musician of the Year. The fourth album, Unik (1994), won the Jazz Emma Award, and the band toured extensively in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Japan, Spain, and Sweden. The core trio of Rinne, Kajasto, and Kokkonen developed the sound further on RoK (1996), incorporating hip hop, drum and bass, and jazz; that year they won the Golden Pumpeli Award for the visuals of "Aromaa AltToo."
2000 – 2009
The album Nao (2001), produced largely by Jori Hulkkonen and Veikka Erkola, reached number 32 on the Official Finnish Album Chart, becoming the group's most commercially successful album after RoK. Lumix followed in 2003, with contributions from Erkola and Pauli Saastamoinen. RinneRadio reformed as a trio with Verneri Lumi and Juusonik, releasing Pan in 2004 with guests including Pekka Kuusisto. In 2005, the band performed at a festival curated by Herbie Hancock at Barbican Arts Centre in London and at the North Sea Jazz Festival. They played at the 40th anniversary opening night of Midem in Cannes in 2006, after which they released the album +, again featuring Kuusisto. On (2007) included vocalists Sanni Orasmaa and Kira Kira. Pole Stars (2009) featured Sámi joik singers Ulla Pirttijärvi and Wimme Saari, Johanna Juhola, and Eva Alkula.
2010 – present day
The album StaRRk (2012) was described as more rugged, sharper, and darker than earlier productions. The lineup of Rinne, Juuso Hannukainen, and DJ Muffler remained stable until 2020, when Aleksi Myllykoski replaced Muffler. No new album was released after StaRRk until Balladium in 2023, originally scheduled for winter 2020–2021. Members pursued other projects: Tapani Rinne released solo album Radioton (2019), collaboration albums with Wimme Saari titled Human (2017), and collaborations with Teho Majamäki (Under The Ground, 2015; Inside The Temple, 2012). Since 1996, official releases were on Rockadillo Records, but singles "Yasmin" (2017) and "Zarkukselle" (2018) were published by London-based label The Ambient Zone. The band's website describes their live performances as customized to the event and venue, ranging from church concerts to rave festivals.
