AS Monaco was founded on 1 August 1920 through the unification of local clubs from France and the principality. The club played its early matches in Fontvieille and sometimes in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. In 1933, Monaco was invited by the French Football Federation to turn professional, but was relegated to amateur leagues the following year. The club re-acquired professional status in 1948 and gained promotion to the French first division in 1953.

Under coach Lucien Leduc, Monaco won its first professional trophy, the Coupe de France, in 1960, followed by its first French Championship in 1961 and a League and Cup Double in 1963. After a period of decline, the club returned to success in the 1980s, winning multiple league titles and Coupe de France trophies. The 1990s saw further league championships under managers Arsène Wenger (1988), Jean Tigana (1997), and Claude Puel (2000).

In 2003, despite finishing second in Ligue 1, the club faced a €50 million debt penalty that initially threatened relegation to Ligue 2, but on appeal the punishment was reduced to a transfer ban and wage cap, allowing Monaco to remain in the top flight. The following season, under Didier Deschamps, Monaco reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2004, beating Real Madrid and Chelsea along the way. The club has been majority-owned by Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev since December 2011.
