Manchester United were the favourites, as Brighton had been relegated from the First Division that season, and had never reached a cup final before. United had finished third in the league that season and already had four FA Cup victories to their name. The final ended in a 2–2 draw, forcing a replay at Wembley five days later, which Manchester United won 4–0. It was the third successive year that the FA Cup Final required a replay.

In Their Own Story

The rain had started just before kickoff, a fine drizzle that turned the Wembley grass into a dark, glistening carpet. Sheedy wiped the water from his eyes, felt the cold seep through his sleeves, and watched the United players huddle near their own box. He could hear the crowd — not a roar, not yet, but a low, sustained hum, thousands of blue-and-white throats breathing as one. The ball came to him on the edge of the area, and for a half-second the world narrowed to the shape of the goal, the angle of his laces, the wet leather. He struck. The net bulged. And then the noise hit him like a physical force, a wave of sound and colour that swallowed the pitch, the stands, the rain. He ran, arms wide, and for a moment he was not a man in a blue shirt but the entire city of Liverpool, roaring, alive, unbreakable.

The first match saw Brighton take an early lead through Gordon Smith. Frank Stapleton equalised and Ray Wilkins put Manchester United into the lead. Gary Stevens scored a late equaliser for Brighton, taking the game into extra time. The game became infamous for the radio commentary line '...and Smith must score' as Gordon Smith's shot was saved by Gary Bailey, forcing a replay. In the replay, Bryan Robson scored twice, Norman Whiteside scored a header, and Arnold Mühren scored a penalty, giving Manchester United a 4–0 victory.
