In Their Own Story
The rain came sideways off the Mersey, turning the terraces at Goodison into a river of blue. A boy of nine, his father's old shirt hanging off his shoulders like a sail, pressed his face against the cold glass of the turnstile queue. Around him, three hundred voices were already singing, a low rumble that built and built until the concrete itself seemed to vibrate. His father's hand found his shoulder — a single squeeze, no words needed. The floodlights snapped on, and for a moment the pitch was a sheet of green fire, the goal nets glowing white, and the boy could see, impossibly, that the blue shirts on the field were the same blue as the sky above the Anfield rooftops, the same blue as the chapel where it all began. He did not know yet that he would be here forty years from now, older, greyer, still singing. He only knew that the Bluebirds were about to fly.
