Solaris (solar power)

ESA proposal for space-based solar power with 2030 demonstration.

SOLARIS is a European Space Agency plan to collect solar power in space and beam it to Earth. Each modular panel would be nearly a kilometer wide, paired with ground antennas roughly six kilometers across, capable of generating up to a petawatt. The project could meet between one-seventh and one-third of Europe’s current electricity needs, or ten percent of its forecast 2050 demand. In November 2022, ESA’s ministerial council approved funding for a three-year study of the concept.
