Jake Cody, born 4 July 1988, is a professional poker player from Rochdale, England. He burst onto the European tournament scene in 2010, winning €857,000 at the EPT Deauville in January and £273,783 at the WPT London in August. His live tournament winnings total over $5,100,000.
Career
Jake Cody was born on July 4, 1988, in Rochdale, England. He began playing poker online with a $10 deposit and never added any more money to his account. Before turning professional, he was studying psychology at university, but he quit to focus on poker, a choice his parents were initially unhappy about. He credits his achievements to dedication, often putting in 12-hour sessions, studying poker literature, participating in online forums, and discussing strategy with other players, which he believes is essential for growth.
His first tournament cash came in April 2009 at a Grosvenor UK Poker Tour side event in Manchester, and he also placed in the money at the first UK and Ireland Poker Tour event in Galway that December. His big breakthrough happened a month later in January 2010, when he won the EPT Deauville Main Event, beating 768 players and taking home €857,000. After a quieter period with some smaller cashes on the UKIPT, he won the World Poker Tour London event in August 2010, defeating Sweden’s Nichlas Mattsson heads-up in the £5,000 buy-in at the Palm Beach Casino for £273,783.
This gave him the second leg of poker’s triple crown. The European Poker Awards named him both Poker Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, but he missed the ceremony in Paris on February 13 because he was playing the £1,500 High Roller at the UKIPT Nottingham, where he beat a final table including Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott to win £34,200. On June 4, 2011, Cody completed the triple crown by winning his first WSOP bracelet in the $25,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em event, defeating Yevgeniy Timoshenko.
It was only the second bracelet event he had ever entered. Later that year at the WSOPE, he finished 7th in the Main Event for €150,000. In November 2011, he signed a sponsorship deal with PKR.com, but on January 8, 2013, he joined Team PokerStars Pro at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. He plays online as “jakecody” on PokerStars.
Personal life
His total live tournament winnings exceed $5,100,000. He now lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend and produces weekly vlogs on his YouTube channel.
