The Hamburg Sea Devils were announced in November 2020 as part of the inaugural European League of Football season. In March 2021, the ELF reached an agreement with the NFL to use team names from NFL Europe, and Hamburg adopted the Sea Devils name. Their first head coach, Ted Daisher, was released three weeks into the 2021 season due to 'different views and expectations regarding the philosophy and leadership of our team,' and was replaced by offensive coordinator Andreas Nommensen. For the 2022 season, Charles Jones was hired as head coach. From July 2022, former NFL coach John Shoop served as a consultant. The Sea Devils started with a win over Berlin Thunder and a loss to Barcelona Dragons, then won ten consecutive games, secured the Northern Conference title, and became the best regular-season team. They defeated the Raiders Tirol 19–7 in the semifinals but lost the championship game 15–27 to the Vienna Vikings. Jones was extended for 2023, but the team finished 4–8 and missed the playoffs for the first time. After the season, Jones was dismissed, and several staff left for other teams.

In 2024, Matt Johnson became head coach, and the team played home games in several cities across Northern Germany rather than at Stadion Hoheluft, finishing 2–10. Johnson remained head coach for the 2025 season. In the semi-finals, played before their home supporters, the Sea Devils held the Raiders Tirol to just seven points in a 19-7 win. On June 11, 2023, the Sea Devils staged a rare appearance at the much larger Volksparkstadion before a crowd of 32,500, but the outing ended in a 22-27 defeat. In the aftermath, Jones was dismissed, defensive coordinator Kendral Ellison departed for the Munich Ravens, and general manager Max Paatz moved to Rhein Fire. For 2024, Matt Johnson was installed as head coach alongside defensive coordinator Brandon Noble. Quarterback Javarian Smith was replaced by D'Angelo Fulfort after week seven. The Final Whistle – League Collapse and Cessation

In September 2024, the club introduced Shuan Fatah as its new head coach. Fatah carried a decorated résumé, having won two German and five Austrian Bowls, and had previously served as a running back coach for the original Sea Devils during the NFL Europe era. Yet the franchise's fate was ultimately sealed by forces far beyond the gridiron. After the 2025 ELF season wrapped, eleven teams departed to establish the European Football Alliance, and the Sea Devils were conspicuously absent from that grouping. The league attempted to restructure itself through self-administration proceedings in hopes of sustaining a 2026 campaign, but on March 23, 2026, insolvency proceedings were formally initiated against the European League of Football. With the league shut down, the Hamburg Sea Devils effectively ceased all operations. No official farewell statement was ever issued by the franchise, and the chapter simply closed in silence.
