The year began with the Texas Revolution, including the Battle of the Alamo (February 23–March 6), where at least 182 Texan defenders died against over 2,000 Mexican soldiers. The Republic of Texas declared independence on March 2, and the Constitution of the Republic of Texas was adopted on March 17. The Goliad massacre occurred on March 27, killing 342 Texan prisoners. The Battle of San Jacinto on April 21 led to the capture of Mexican General Santa Anna, and the Treaties of Velasco were signed on May 14. The advisor folds the dispatch, straightens his cravat, and says simply, "Sire, we are twenty-six years from the world that will remember us. The question is whether we survive to see it." The king does not answer. He is already reaching for the Prussian dispatch.
