1700

1700: The year the Great Northern War began and the Spanish succession crisis erupted.

1700 (MDCC) was a common year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar and a common year starting on Monday of the Julian calendar. As of March 1 (O.S. February 19), where the Julian calendar acknowledged a leap day and the Gregorian calendar did not, the Julian calendar fell one day further behind, bringing the difference to 11 days until February 28 (O.S. February 17), 1800. In Sweden, the year started in the Julian calendar and remained so until February 28. Then, by skipping the leap day, the Swedish calendar was introduced, letting Wednesday, February 28, be followed by Thursday, March 1, giving the entire year the same pattern as a common year starting on Monday. This calendar, being ten days behind the Gregorian and one day ahead of the Julian, lasts until 1712.

Lore & Background

The year 1700 saw the beginning of the Great Northern War with a joint invasion of Swedish territory by Denmark and Poland/Saxony. Charles XII of Sweden counter-attacked by invading Zealand, compelling the Danes to submit to peace via the Peace of Travendal. Later, Charles XII routed the Russian army at the Battle of Narva. In Spain, Charles II died without children, and his will made Philip of Anjou his heir; Louis XIV accepted the Spanish crown on behalf of his grandson, triggering the War of the Spanish Succession. The Prussian Academy of Sciences was founded with Gottfried Leibniz as president. Pope Innocent XII died and was succeeded by Clement XI.
