Critical reception

Robin Brooks, writing for GeekDad, noted that Cox again explores what family means, capturing its turmoil, and also highlights bigotry and resistance to difference. Brooks called the novel a wonderful conclusion to the duology. Sam Tyler, in SF Book Reviews, described the book as a more uplifting form of dystopian science fiction, finding hope for humanity through humility and cooperation despite threats of intergalactic war. Tyler observed that Cox has a gift for depicting families genuinely. John Clute, in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, stated that the family values that triumphed in the first book continue prominently. Suanne Schafer called the novel a gem, stating it portrays humanity's light and darkness and upends human-centered expectations about contact with aliens.
