History
Scott and Gray were inspired by the success of Yo and new emoji characters from the Unicode Consortium. The app originated largely as a joke, as the developers commented during a talk at Electromagnetic Field Festival. By launch, 70,000 unique usernames had been reserved. After press coverage, venture capital offers arrived, but the app closed on 30 July 2015 due to maintenance costs and effort.
Development
Emojli was built by two people: Scott handled the backend with PHP and MySQL, while Gray created the frontend using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They faced issues because emoji support varied across web browsers and mobile operating systems. The entire project was completed in their spare time over roughly a month. The iOS version launched on August 29, 2014, followed by the Android version on January 30, 2015. The app was shut down on July 30, 2015, with no plans for revival.
