Super Bowl LVI halftime show

The halftime show for Super Bowl LVI, branded as the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, took place on February 13, 2022, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. It was the first Super Bowl halftime show built entirely around hip hop music, and the last to be sponsored by Pepsi before Apple Music took over the following year. The headliners were Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar, with surprise appearances from 50 Cent and Anderson .Paak. The show was produced by Jesse Collins and Roc Nation, directed by Hamish Hamilton, and included American Sign Language interpreters Sean Forbes and Warren "WAWA" Snipe. It aired nationally on NBC.

The performance won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live), making it the first halftime show to do so, along with Emmys for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special and Outstanding Music Direction. Critics praised the lineup and setlist, noting it was designed to evoke nostalgia for Generation X and Millennial audiences. Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield called it an “old-school West Coast rap history lesson” and ranked it the fourth-best halftime show ever. The Independent’s Kevin E G Perry gave it four stars, addressing Dr. Dre’s history of violence against women but acknowledging his influence. The Guardian’s Sam Wolfson awarded five stars. The FCC received only 33 complaints, an unusually low number.

An average of 103.4 million viewers watched the show in the 8:15–8:30 pm ET slot, a 7 percent increase from the previous year and higher than the game itself, which averaged 101.1 million viewers. Streaming numbers surged afterward: Dr. Dre’s music rose 185 percent on Spotify, with “The Next Episode” and “Still D.R.E.” up 270 and 245 percent respectively. Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama” increased 520 percent, and Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” rose 250 percent. Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” entered the U.S. Spotify top 10 for the first time, and his album *Curtain Call* jumped 118 spots on the Billboard 200. A documentary about the show’s creation, *The Show: California Love*, aired on Showtime on December 23, 2022.
