Released on Elvis Presley's 40th birthday, Promised Land was his 21st studio album. Cut in December 1973 at Memphis's Stax Records studios, it came out via RCA Records on January 8, 1975. In the US, it peaked at number 47 on the Billboard Top 200 and topped both Billboard's Top Country LPs and Cashbox's Country albums charts. The UK saw it reach number 21.

Content
The December 1973 sessions yielded this album as a second batch, after the strongest tracks had already appeared on Good Times. Its title track, a re-recording of Chuck Berry's 1965 song, came out as a single on September 27, 1974, climbing to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and into the UK top ten. The B-side, "It's Midnight," hit number 9 on the Country Charts. Another single, "If You Talk in Your Sleep," reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. The title track later appeared in the 1997 film Men in Black.
