Content
Issued to capitalize on the response to From Elvis in Memphis and Presley's success as a Las Vegas headliner, this double album is his first official live album. Colonel Tom Parker secured a month-long engagement at the International Hotel, and Presley replaced his 1960s sidemen with musicians who would become his Taking Care of Business band. The second LP's musicians were assembled by Chips Moman from the early 1969 American Sound Studios sessions. The first album contains recordings from Presley's first live performances since March 1961, featuring hits from the 1950s and early 1960s, a cover of "Words" by the Bee Gees, "In The Ghetto," and an extended "Suspicious Minds." The second album comprises ten recordings from the winter 1969 sessions not used on From Elvis in Memphis, including "Stranger in My Hometown" and B-sides "The Fair's Moving On" and "You'll Think of Me."
Reissues
In November 1970, RCA reissued the set as individual albums in the US, with subtitles In Person at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada as LSP 4428 and Back in Memphis as LSP 4429, though the double LP LSP 6020 remained available through the 1970s. In the United Kingdom, only the double LP set has been released. The entirety of Back in Memphis appears on the compact disc boxed set From Nashville to Memphis: The Essential 60s Masters and on the double-disc compilation Suspicious Minds.
