Background
By 1965, Elvis Presley’s recording work had shifted entirely to movie soundtracks, with no proper studio album since Pot Luck in June 1962. Seven non-movie singles had come out since then, some using outtakes from sessions as early as 1958. A late May 1963 session failed to produce a fifth studio album for the decade. To mark Presley’s tenth year with RCA Victor, the label invented the “Anniversary Album” concept, resulting in Elvis for Everyone. Its cover shows Presley next to Nipper the dog, the RCA Victor trademark, perched on a cash register. After May 1963, Presley had only one non-movie session, in January 1964, which produced just three tracks—two already released as single sides. With no new material, RCA Victor assembled the album from unused recordings spanning back to the Sun Records years, drawing from both soundtrack and commercial sessions. Though it reached the top ten on the LP chart, it became the first Presley album of the decade to sell fewer than 300,000 copies. It later earned a Gold certification from the RIAA.
Content
Of the tracks on Elvis for Everyone!, only Summer Kisses, Winter Tears, recorded for but unused in the film Flaming Star, had been previously issued, on the EP Elvis by Request: Flaming Star and 3 Other Great Songs. Several tracks had appeared in films but not on record: In My Way in Wild in the Country (1961), Sound Advice in Follow That Dream (1962), and the Neapolitan ballad Santa Lucia in Viva Las Vegas (1964). The remaining eight tracks had never been issued in any form. The Sun ballad Tomorrow Night received overdubs for this album; its original form was not officially issued until the 1985 compilation Reconsider Baby. RCA had intended to include the unreleased Sun track Tennessee Saturday Night but withdrew it, replacing it with Tomorrow Night. No other source has mentioned a Presley Sun recording with that title, nor has one been discovered, though a song titled Tennessee Saturday Night was slated for Loving You but not recorded. Goldmine Magazine published what appeared to be an acetate of the Sun recording in the early 1990s, and a nine-second live version believed to be from the Louisiana Hayride radio show appeared on YouTube in the 2000s. As a compilation of mostly unissued leftovers with a short running time, the album anticipated similar budget releases on the RCA Camden label in the late 1960s and early 1970s. RCA did not include it in its reissue program, instead appending its songs as bonus tracks to other albums, with the overdubbed Tomorrow Night ultimately replaced by the original Sun master in general circulation.
