Elvis Now

Sixteenth studio album by Elvis Presley, released in 1972.

Elvis Presley's sixteenth studio album, Elvis Now, came out in February 1972. It debuted on the Billboard chart on February 12 and peaked at number 43. The only single pulled from the album, "Until It's Time for You to Go" backed with "We Can Make the Morning," hit number 9 on the US Easy Listening chart in March 1972 and number 5 on the UK Singles Chart the following month. The RIAA certified the album Gold on March 27, 1992.

In Brazil during the 1970s, the track "Sylvia" became a hit for Presley. Despite the title's implication of freshness, the songs were recorded between one and three years prior to the album's release. "Hey Jude," a cover of the Beatles song, was left over from early 1969 sessions at the American Studio in Memphis. "Sylvia" and "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago" came from Nashville sessions in June 1970, with the latter having previously appeared in a shortened form on the Elvis Country album.

The remaining tracks were cut during sessions at RCA Studio B in Nashville in March, May, and June 1971. Unlike Presley's other albums from that period—Elvis Country, He Touched Me, and Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas, each focused on a single genre—Elvis Now mixed country, gospel, soul, and pop. In 2010, an expanded version of the album was released through the FTD collector series. This reissue included the original 1972 album plus bonus material from the 1971 Nashville sessions: the 1971 non-album singles "I'm Leavin'" and "It's Only Love," the B-side "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" from the upcoming "An American Trilogy" single, and several outtakes, among them a nine-minute informal jam of "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" (a shortened version had appeared on the 1973 Elvis album).

Personnel included Elvis Presley on lead vocals and possibly acoustic rhythm guitar on "Hey Jude," "Sylvia," and "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago"; James Burton on lead guitar; Norbert Putnam on bass; Chip Young on rhythm guitar; Charlie Hodge on acoustic rhythm guitar; David Briggs on piano; Jerry Carrigan on drums and percussion; Charlie McCoy on harmonica, organ, and percussion; Kenny Buttrey on drums; Reggie Young on lead guitar for "Hey Jude"; Bobby Wood on piano for "Hey Jude"; Bobby Emmons on organ for "Hey Jude"; Tommy Cogbill and Mike Leech on bass for "Hey Jude"; Gene Chrisman on drums for "Hey Jude"; Joe Moscheo on piano for "Fools Rush In"; and Glen Spreen on organ for "Until It's Time for You to Go."
