Background

The album "The One" marked Elton John's first project after completing treatment for drug and alcohol addiction and bulimia in 1990. For this record, he switched from the Roland RD-1000 digital piano used heavily on his previous two albums, "Reg Strikes Back" and "Sleeping with the Past," to an acoustic Yamaha Disklavier. However, he later brought back the RD-1000 for the supporting "The One Tour" (heard on "Live in Barcelona") and his 1993 album "Duets." Swedish musician Olle Romö worked with John and lyricist Bernie Taupin on just one track, "Runaway Train," which featured Eric Clapton singing a duet with John. Pink Floyd's David Gilmour contributed guitar to "Understanding Women." Longtime Elton John Band drummer Nigel Olsson, female backing vocalist Kiki Dee (who previously duetted with John on "Don't Go Breaking My Heart"), and guitarist Davey Johnstone all sang backing vocals on several songs.
