Angelspit

Australian electro-industrial duo with horror and punk influences.

Last updated

Angelspit is an Australian electronic music band formed in 2004 by vocalists and synthesists Destroyx (Amelia Tan) and ZooG (Karl Learmont). Originally from Sydney and now based in Los Angeles, the band blends horror, punk, pop, and electronic music with imagery of medical experiments and grotesque societies. They have toured with acts such as KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, and Lords of Acid.

History

Karl Learmont, known as ZooG, and Amelia Tan, known as Destroyx, first connected through an online zine forum. Their shared passion for zines led them to launch a distro called Vox Populis in 2002. They soon began creating their own zines, which later provided lyrical material for their music. In 2003, they formed the band Angelspit.

The duo independently released their first EP, Nurse Grenade, on 3 October 2004. Their first full-length album, Krankhaus, came out on 6 June 2006, also self-released. It was reissued on 30 January 2007 with an extra remix album titled Surgically Atoned, and in the United States through Dancing Ferret Discs. That album featured remixes by Combichrist and Ego Likeness.

A music video for the track "Vena Cava" appeared on 22 August 2007. The band toured Australia, the United States, and Europe, and during this period they lived in Berlin to work on their second album, Blood Death Ivory, which was released on 11 June 2008. They kept touring in support of that material.

Their first remix collection, Black Kingdom Red Kingdom, arrived on 15 May 2009. Around then, they started making "Blipverts," short video blogs and tutorials. Their third studio album, Hideous and Perfect, was released on 9 September 2009, followed by a video for "Fuck the Revolution" on 28 September 2009. A second remix album, Larva Pupa Tank Coffin, came out on 10 October 2010, containing four new Angelspit songs and remixes from the band and other artists.

A video for the remix of "Sleep Now" was released on 2 October 2010. Their third remix album, Carbon Beauty, was released on 8 March 2011, featuring three new tracks and ten remixes of songs from Hideous and Perfect. Videos for "Toxic Girl" and "Like It? Lick It!" followed on 13 April 2011 and 27 July 2011, respectively.
