The Chesapeake Baysox are a Minor League Baseball team based in Bowie, Maryland. They are the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and play in the Eastern League. Their home field is Prince George's Stadium. For over three decades, from 1993 to 2024, the team was called the Bowie Baysox before adopting its current name on November 22, 2024, to better represent the broader Chesapeake Bay region.
The team’s roots trace back to the Hagerstown Suns, the Orioles’ Single-A affiliate from 1989 to 1992. When Major League Baseball expanded in 1993, the Maryland Baseball Limited Partnership, which owned the Suns and the Advanced-A Frederick Keys, tried to land a new Triple-A franchise in central Maryland. That bid failed, but the strong community support for a team in Bowie prompted the partnership to move the Double-A club from Hagerstown. The Suns were then demoted to Low-A. A naming contest drew over 3,500 suggestions, and “Baysox” beat out finalists “BayBirds” and “Nationals” (the latter name later went to Washington’s major-league team in 2005). The “Bay” references point to the Chesapeake Bay, less than 20 miles east of Bowie.
A complicated land deal delayed the construction of Prince George’s Stadium. For their inaugural 1993 season, the Baysox played home games at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, which the Orioles had left the year before. A harsh winter then kept the new stadium from being ready for the start of the 1994 season, forcing the team to play 31 games at four different venues, including the University of Maryland and the Naval Academy. They finally moved into their permanent home on June 16, 1994.
After two losing seasons, the Baysox returned to the playoffs in 1997 and were named the top Double-A franchise in America, partly due to strong attendance despite their proximity to the Baltimore major-league market. That same year, on June 28, the team introduced Louie, a green, furry mascot with pink hair and a long snout of unknown species, believed to be modeled after Chessie (the Chesapeake Bay sea monster). Louie serves as mayor of “Louieville, Maryland,” a playful twist on Louisville, Kentucky, and a rhyme with Bowie.
On July 12, 2000, the Baysox hosted the Double-A All-Star Game, featuring players from the Eastern, Southern, and Texas leagues.
