Harbin Soviet
A Russian soviet in Harbin during the 1917 Revolution.
The Harbin Soviet, or Harbin Soviet of Workers and Soldiers Deputies, was a council of Russian workers and soldiers formed in Harbin immediately after Czar Nicholas II's abdication in 1917. It sought to seize control over the Chinese Eastern Railway and to defend Russian citizens in Manchuria. The Bolshevik Martemyan Ryutin served as its chairman. On November 21, 1917, the new Soviet government in Russia recognized the Harbin Soviet as its representation in Manchuria, placing Russian citizens there under its protection. The soviet then requested recognition from the local taotai.
