Fate: Undiscovered Realms

Stand-alone expansion to the 2005 dungeon crawler Fate.

Fate: Undiscovered Realms

Fate: Undiscovered Realms is a fantasy action role-playing roguelike dungeon crawler from WildTangent, released on July 17, 2008, as a standalone expansion for the 2005 PC game Fate. When bought in stores, the retail version also includes the original Fate. A second expansion, Fate: The Traitor Soul, followed in 2009. The game, along with its predecessor and sequels, was remastered and bundled into the Fate: Reawakened collection, which launched on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S on March 12, 2025.

The gameplay is similar to Fate and titles like Diablo and Diablo II: players guide a character through increasingly difficult dungeon levels, fighting monsters, completing quests, collecting loot and gold, and improving attributes and skills. Dungeon levels are fully randomized—layout, treasures, and monsters change each visit. Players can import their character from the original Fate if they own it. Though advertised as having infinite dungeon levels, the publisher’s forum notes that at level 2,147,483,647 (2^31-1), computing issues arise and the character can go no further.

The story begins after the hero of Grove completes his quest and celebrates. A mysterious old man appears, claiming another great evil has risen, and tricks the hero into following him. The old man opens the Book of Fate and seizes its power. The hero must stop this new foe by exploring two new realms: Druantia, a mossy forest with dry tunnels, and Typhon, a frozen tundra and arctic wasteland. The town of Grove is replaced by three new hubs: the Outpost of Druantia, the Outpost of Typhon, and the Temple of Fate. Each realm has randomized dungeons, shopkeepers, and NPCs, with dungeons about half the size of the original Fate dungeon. Players start in the Temple of Fate, receiving quests to complete the dungeons of Typhon and Druantia. Two statues in the Temple require players to find missing equipment on specific levels and place it on the corresponding statue. Once all clothing is restored, the statue releases a prize and a potion that transforms the player’s pet into the depicted hero. The potion can be used repeatedly, but the prize is given only once. After finishing both realms, players return to the quest-givers, unlocking a new dungeon and the final boss, Kaos. It is unclear what happened to the old man, but Kaos and the old man may be the same being.

Lore & Background

The hero of the town of Grove has completed his quest and celebrates his victory. During the festivities an unusual old man appears and convinces the hero to come with him, telling him that another great evil has arisen. The old man has tricked the hero, and opened the Book of Fate, gaining its powers. The hero must now stop this new foe by exploring the dungeons of Druantia, a realm of mossy forest and dry tunnels, and Typhon, a frozen tundra and arctic wasteland. In this game, the town of Grove has been replaced with three new realms: the Outpost of Druantia, the Outpost of Typhon and the Temple of Fate. Each realm features new randomized dungeons, shopkeepers and non-player characters (NPCs). Each dungeon is only about half the size of the original dungeon in Fate. Players start in the Temple of Fate where they are given quests to enter and complete the dungeons of Typhon and Druantia. There are also two statues in the Temple: in specific levels the player will find missing equipment which they must then put on the corresponding statues. When all the missing clothing has been put back on, the statue will release a prize, and a potion which will turn the player's pet into the hero that the statue depicts. The statue will release the potion as many times as the player wants, but the prize is only released once. Once the first two realms have been completed, the player must return to the quest-givers in the Temple of Fate, whereupon a new dungeon is unlocked and the player tasked with defeating the lord of the dungeon and final boss in the game, Kaos. It is a mystery what happened to the evil old man from the introduction, but it is possible that Kaos and the old man are the same being.

Reader's Guide

Fate: Undiscovered Realms is significant as a stand-alone expansion that extended the life of the original Fate while introducing new realms, a mod-inserting system, and a remastered re-release in 2025. Its legacy lies in its role within the Fate series, bridging the original game and its sequel The Traitor Soul. The expansion received fairly positive reviews, with a score of 7.0 from both GameSpot and IGN. GameSpot's Brett Todd praised the simple charm and addictive gameplay carried over from the original Fate but criticized the limited new features, calling it more of an extension than an expansion. IGN's Jimmy Thang called it a solid addition to the hack and slash genre, albeit hindered by uninspired dungeon design. The game introduced a new mod-inserting system where users could move mod folders into a specific 'REALMS' folder, allowing manual removal and changes without increasing loading times. This system was more stable than the previous mod manager. The game's dungeons are fully randomized for each level, and it is advertised as having infinite dungeon levels, though at level 2,147,483,647 the game runs into computing problems. The remastered inclusion in Fate: Reawakened in 2025 ensured continued access for modern audiences.
