In the DreamWorks Animation Trolls franchise, hair is a central and defining feature of the Trolls, directly inspired by the Troll doll toys created by Thomas Dam. Instead, the franchise's origin story in the 2016 film Trolls was reimagined by director Mike Mitchell and writer Erica Rivinoja to present the origin of the Trolls' colorful hair as part of a musical comedy. The hair's vibrant colors and styles are a key visual element, reflecting the pop-singing nature of Poppy and Branch's village and the diverse musical tribes introduced in later films, such as the rock trolls in Trolls World Tour.
