History

Yuji Horii entered the world on January 6, 1954, on Awaji Island in Japan. He studied at Waseda University, earning a degree from its Department of Literature. Before designing games, he wrote freelance for newspapers, comics, and magazines, including a video game column called Famicom Shinken that appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1985 to 1988. His path shifted when he took part in an Enix-sponsored programming contest; his entry, a tennis game called Love Match Tennis, placed, pushing him toward a career in game design.

He then single-handedly created The Portopia Serial Murder Case, a title that later inspired Hideo Kojima to pursue game development. This game launched the Yuji Horii Mysteries trilogy, followed by The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance in 1984 and Karuizawa Yūkai Annai in 1985. After making more visual novel adventures, Horii developed Dragon Quest, widely seen as the foundation for Japanese console role-playing games. He drew inspiration from Portopia, as well as Wizardry and Ultima.

A fan of Apple PC role-playing games, he aimed Dragon Quest at everyday players who found those games too hard, so he designed an intuitive control system shaped by his work on Portopia. His other projects include the Itadaki Street series. Horii also served as a supervisor on the Super Nintendo game Chrono Trigger, which featured multiple endings; he appears in one of them alongside the development team. Additionally, he sits on the selection committee for the annual Super Dash Novel Rookie of the Year Award.
