The game reached 15 million downloads within three months of its Japan release. It hit 100 million downloads worldwide by November 2016. In April 2017, it topped the iPhone gross revenue chart in the United States, with close to 1.5 million downloads and nearly $18 average revenue per user. By July 2017, it was released in 50 countries, reached number 1 on the App Store in 16 countries, and achieved 200 million downloads worldwide.
Downloads exceeded 250 million by August 2018, 300 million by August 2019, and 350 million by August 2021. In Japan, it was the fifth top-grossing mobile game in both 2017 and 2018. Gacha scandal
On November 14, 2017, a new character Kefla was advertised for the gacha pool, but few players successfully drew her, leading to suspicion that the developer manipulated her drop rate. The developer stopped the gacha function, denied access to the drop list, and explained it as an unintentional mistake. They gave 300 Dragon Stones to all Japanese server players and a full Dragon Stone refund to those who spent on the banner. Another scandal involved STR Ultra Instinct Sign Goku on the global version; a bug caused players who pulled him to receive a Super Saiyan 3 Goku card instead.
