Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Piccolo and Gohan save the world from the Red Ribbon Army.

Last updated

It is the twenty-first animated feature film in the Dragon Ball franchise and the first produced mainly using CGI animation.[1] Released in 2022, "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" is an animated Japanese film blending martial arts, fantasy, and adventure, and it continues the story from the 2018 movie "Dragon Ball Super: Broly".[1] The narrative centers on Piccolo and his previous pupil Gohan as they attempt to protect the planet from the reestablished Red Ribbon Army.[1]

Making and release

The film introduces new transformations for Gohan and Piccolo.[2] Instead of featuring Goku and Vegeta as the main characters, the story puts Piccolo and Gohan at the forefront to set this movie apart from earlier entries.[3] Akira Toriyama was responsible for creating the look of the Red Ribbon Army members and their transportation.[3] The android characters Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 are voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya and Mamoru Miyano, respectively.[4]

Japan's initial release date for the film was April 22, 2022, but a ransomware attack on Toei Animation forced a delay to June 11.[5] March 14, 2023, was the date when "Super Hero" became available on Blu-ray and DVD.[6]

What the cited sources add

A Polygon article reported that a teaser trailer premiered at New York Comic Con on October 7, 2021.[7] The official Dragon Ball website stated that Hiroshi Kamiya's role marks his return to the Dragon Ball franchise following the end of "Dragon Ball GT"[8] A Screen Rant article noted that the shift to 3D animation has received negative attention from some fans.[9] An Anime News Network article confirmed that planning for the new film project began in 2018, before the release of "Dragon Ball Super: Broly".[10]

A B− grade was assigned to "Super Hero" by Richard Eisenbeis from Anime News Network, who also commended its animation.[11]
