Biology and range
After the gendarmerie learned of the painting, Isto escaped to Germany via Sweden with the painting and its prints.[3] The year 1899, when the painting was finished, coincided with Emperor Nicholas II's issuance of the February Manifesto.[2] Emmi Ajo, who was married to Isto's friend Benjamin Ajo, proposed the painting's title.[2] Emma Kyöstäjä, a native of Alatornio like Isto, served as the model for the artwork.[3]
In Berlin, the Meissenbach & Rippart press created more than ten thousand rotogravure photographic reproductions, each measuring 48 × 37.5 cm with a picture size of 30 × 21.5 cm.[3] Postcards were issued in at least six editions, including one version with Russian text.[3]
What the specialist sources record
That businessman later gave the painting to municipal official Niilo Helander in Heinola.[3] A few years afterward, Isto attempted to dispose of the painting through a lottery; however, the woman in Helsinki who won it was too afraid to take it.[3] Isto repurchased the painting from that woman and then sold it to a Swedish businessman from Luleå.[3]
