King K. Rool
The Kremling leader who schemes to steal bananas, kidnap Kongs, and reshape worlds with hazardous banana mush.
King K. Rool is the main antagonist of Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise and the leader of the Kremlings, an army of crocodilian raiders. Created by British game designer Gregg Mayles, he debuted in Donkey Kong Country (1994) seeking to steal Donkey Kong's banana hoard. His name serves as a pun on the word "cruel," reflecting his malevolent nature. Over the years, K. Rool has adopted various personas, including pirate Kaptain K. Rool in Donkey Kong Country 2 (1995) and mad scientist Baron K. Roolenstein in Donkey Kong Country 3 (1996). He also appeared as King Krusha K. Rool in a boxing match in Donkey Kong 64 (1999). After a long absence, he returned in Donkey Kong Bananza (2025), where it was revealed he had been trapped underground searching for the Banandium Root. He has also appeared as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018) and Mario Super Sluggers (2008).

Lore & Background
King K. Rool's history is marked by his role as the primary foe of the Donkey Kong franchise since 1994. In Donkey Kong Country, he stole the protagonist's banana hoard with the aid of his minions. His schemes evolved in subsequent titles: in Donkey Kong Country 2 (1995), he kidnapped Donkey Kong for a ransom, prompting Diddy and Dixie Kong to save him. In Donkey Kong Country 3 (1996), he assumed the guise of Baron K. Roolenstein, kidnapping both Donkey Kong and Diddy to power his KAOS robot, requiring Dixie and Kiddy Kong to intervene. By Donkey Kong 64 (1999), K. Rool piloted a laser-armed ship intent on destroying Donkey Kong Island, capturing Tiny, Lanky, Chunky, and Diddy Kongs for the final confrontation where he fought as King Krusha K. Rool in a boxing ring. Following his appearance in Donkey Kong Jungle Climber, he was largely absent until 2025. In Donkey Kong Bananza (2025), it is explained that K. Rool and his Kremlings were trapped underground while searching for the wish-fulfilling Banandium Root. Unintentionally freed by Donkey Kong and Pauline, he punched Void Kong away, fought them at Planet Core, and pursued them to New Donk City. There, he attempted to reshape the city in his image using the Banandium Root while flooding it with hazardous banana mush before being defeated again.
Reader's Guide
King K. Rool is depicted as a large, obese crocodile wearing a red cape, golden wristbands, a belly-like plate, a large crown, and sporting a bloodshot eye. Designed by Steve Mayles (brother of Gregg Mayles), his concept art originally featured a military theme under the name 'Krudd.' When asked about the "K" in his name, Gregg Mayles stated it was intended to inflate K. Rool's ego, suggesting it could have been tonal like "Kremling" or out of character like "Keith." His boss fights vary by game: Donkey Kong Country featured purple gas clouds that reverse player movement as an homage to the 1984 game Sabre Wulf; Donkey Kong 64's boxing fight required all five Kongs to ensure they felt like a team. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018), he became playable with attacks based on his various boss appearances. Outside the main series, he appeared in Mario Super Sluggers (2008) and as a main character in the Donkey Kong Country animated series, where actor Benedict Campbell voiced him while K. Rool attempted to steal the Crystal Coconut. Campbell reprised this role in the 2023 fan-made animation DKC: Return to Krocodile Isle.
