Critical reception
Billboard's February 26, 1977, issue described the album as Parton's most progressive and individualistic LP, noting that changes in producer, studio, publisher, and mental outlook had a significant effect. The review stated the album could shift Parton from a country-only base to across-the-board talents like Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Cashbox's same-date review said Parton broke from her country roots with a package for progressive rock listeners, highlighting her versatility and production. The New York Times remarked that the arrangements' inflated rhetoric would appeal to the Barry Manilow crowd.
Commercial performance
The album reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Country LPs chart and peaked at number 71 on the US Billboard 200. The single "You Are" was released in Europe in March 1977 but did not chart; it reached number one in Dutch charts in 1983 when released from a compilation titled "The Love Album". "Applejack" did not chart as a single. "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher" was a single in Germany but did not chart.
