Lore & Background
The album's origins trace to a series of reunions in 2023, when Gontier joined the band onstage in Huntsville, Alabama, and later in Nashville, Tennessee. After positive audience reception, the band considered making Gontier a permanent member, though managers were hesitant until the group wrote the song "The Power" together in the same room. In October 2024, Three Days Grace confirmed Gontier's full-time return and that Walst would continue sharing lead vocals, making the band a five-piece. Recording took place in 2024, with the band finishing in January 2025, working remotely with producers Howard Benson, Dan Lancaster, and Zakk Cervini across Canada, the United States, and England. The album's title was revealed in May 2025, with drummer Neil Sanderson describing it as "a journey through inner collapse and outward defiance" and a nod to the band's second album One-X.
Reader's Guide
Alienation represents a significant moment in Three Days Grace's career, as it is the first album to feature both Adam Gontier and Matt Walst on vocals, blending the band's earlier sound with the style developed during Walst's tenure. Critics noted the album's assured blend of post-grunge, alternative metal, and hard rock, with highlights including the anthemic "Dominate" and "Mayday" and the grief-themed "In Waves." The album produced four number-one singles on the mainstream rock chart, a first for any album by the band. The interplay between Gontier and Walst was praised for opening new dynamic possibilities, though some reviewers felt the album played it safe musically. The band supported the album with tours in Canada, the United States, and Europe, and announced a headlining Alienation tour for 2026.
