Career
Post Malone chose his stage name when he was "14 or 15"; he has stated that "Post" is his last name and that he used a "rap name generator" to get "Malone." In 2010, he played guitar in the metalcore band Ashley's Arrival (also known as Saving Summer) during high school and auditioned for Crown the Empire as a guitarist but was not selected after breaking a guitar string. In late 2011, he released an 11-track mixtape titled Manifest Destiny. In 2013, he performed as a vocalist and guitarist in the band Love In Colors.
At age 17, with friend Jazzy Eff, he released a parody synth-pop ballad called "Why Don't You Love Me" under the alias Leon DeChino for a school project; the song reappeared online in 2016. At 18, using Audacity, he released his second mixtape, Y.A.T.R. (Youngin' After Them Riches), in 2014. He was voted "Most Likely to Become Famous" by his classmates as a senior at Grapevine High School and worked at a Chicken Express as a teenager. He enrolled in Tarrant County College but dropped out, then moved to Los Angeles with friend Jason Probst.
There, he joined the music group BLCKVRD and lived in a house in the San Fernando Valley. He met producers FKi 1st, Sauce Lord Rich, and Rex Kudo, who produced several tracks including "White Iverson." Malone wrote and recorded the song in two days; it was uploaded to SoundCloud in February 2015, and a music video followed on July 19, 2015. The single received praise from Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa but was mocked by Earl Sweatshirt.
Relationship with the hip-hop community
Malone has been called a "culture vulture" multiple times by publications and on social media for appropriating African-American culture. In October 2017, rapper Lil B wrote on Twitter that Malone was "slowly turning into a white dude" and would eventually "be full country and hate blacks." Malone replied in an interview that his white skin has been "used against him." In January 2018, he went on an intoxicated rant against people who describe him as a culture vulture, and in a subsequent GQ interview said "there's a struggle being a white rapper."
In a November 2017 interview with Polish outlet Newonce, Malone said modern hip-hop lacks "people talking about real shit" and advised that "if you're looking to think about life, don't listen to hip-hop." He was criticized by Lil B and Vince Staples. Malone later said the comments came during a "beer-tasting" interview, but Newonce denied he drank much. He clarified that when he wants to reflect on life, he listens to Bob Dylan, and that everyone has such moments regardless of background.
Other ventures
Since 2018, Malone has released several collaborations with Crocs, the fifth in December 2020. During his 2019 Runaway Tour, he released special-edition Bud Light beer cans in 15 cities and multiple lines of sunglasses with Arnette. In December 2019, he collaborated with Howlin' Ray's on a limited-edition hot chicken sandwich called the "Ghost Malone," made with ghost pepper jack cheese and available exclusively on Postmates. In May 2020, he launched his own French rosé wine, Maison No. 9, named after his favorite tarot card, the Nine of Swords; it sold out in two days.
In August 2020, he invested in Envy Gaming, becoming a co-owner. An enthusiast of Magic: The Gathering, he collaborated with Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to create two special supplemental sets: "Secret Lair x Post Malone: Backstage Pass" and "Secret Lair x Post Malone: The Lands." He also owns the unique One Ring card, purchased for more than $2 million. In April 2023, he designed the exterior of a Raising Cane's restaurant in Midvale, Utah.
In February 2025, he collaborated with Mondelez International to create limited-edition Oreo cookies with salted caramel and shortbread creme and nine cookie designs themed after him.
Personal life
As of 2019, Malone resided in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, in a 12,700 sqft home. His former Los Angeles home in the San Fernando Valley was burglarized on September 1, 2018. On August 21, 2018, his plane blew tires during takeoff from Teterboro Airport and made an emergency landing at Stewart International Airport; he tweeted about the incident. On September 8, 2018, his white Rolls-Royce Wraith collided with another car in Santa Monica at 3:30 am; no one was severely injured.
He was in a three-year relationship with Ashlen Diaz that ended in November 2018. In May 2022, he announced he was expecting his first child with his girlfriend; in June, he revealed on The Howard Stern Show that they were engaged and had welcomed a daughter, whose initials "DDP" he tattooed on his forehead. The song "Yours" on his album F-1 Trillion is inspired by his daughter. In March 2025, it was revealed that he and his fiancée, later identified as Hee Sung "Jamie" Park, had quietly split at the end of 2024.
In April 2025, Park filed documents in Los Angeles requesting primary physical custody of their daughter, indicating she was open to shared custody and visitation, and that their daughter had lived with her since November 2024; she also sought legal fees. Malone has since been seen with Christy Lee, a Parsons School of Design student.
