It is primarily kept for sheep-herding and as a companion animal, and it competes successfully in sheepdog trials.[1]
Biology and range
The Border Collie descends from landrace collies found widely across the British Isles.[2] Many modern Border Collies trace back to a dog named Old Hemp, born in Northumberland, England in September 1893.[3][4] Sheep responded readily to Old Hemp because he was a quiet, powerful dog.[5] It is estimated that Old Hemp fathered up to 200 puppies during his life.[5]
What the specialist sources record
The International Sheepdog Association states that the Border Collie is the finest example of a sheepdog breed.[6] The same source notes that National Trials are run over a 400-yard course with five sheep.[6] The International Sheepdog Society describes that sheep on a trial field get only 20 minutes to show their abilities.[7] The Collie Point article reports that the term "border collie" was first used in 1915 by James Reid, secretary of the International Sheep Dog Society.[8]
The Allbordercollies.com account states that Old Hemp was undefeated at trials and sired more than 200 dogs.[9] The same source notes that the Border Collie controls sheep with what is known as "eye"[9]
