Production

Matthew Galkin and Liz Garbus began documenting the case after contacting the Chapin and Laramie families, pitching a victim-forward approach. The Kernodle and Goncalves families declined to participate. The filmmakers also aimed to examine the effects of social media sleuths on the families. In May 2023, Skydance Television optioned James Patterson and Vicky Ward's book The Idaho Four: An American Tragedy for a documentary series co-produced with Story Syndicate, though the series was not based on the book; only research and access were shared. Amazon Prime Video was set to distribute in July 2024, with Garbus and Galkin directing. The series premiered on July 11, 2025. In June 2026, Amazon renewed it for a second season focusing on police and investigators previously under a gag order, as well as perpetrator Bryan Kohberger's plea deal.
