Lore & Background

River Song was created in 2008 for the fourth series under executive producer Russell T Davies. Initially a mystery, her origins were unveiled in Series Six (2011) by Steven Moffat, revealing she is Melody Pond, the daughter of companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams. Conceived on board the TARDIS while traveling through the time vortex, she was born with Time Lord DNA. The name 'River Song' comes from a recursive translation of 'Melody Pond' via the Gamma Forests language, which has rivers but no ponds. She was kidnapped by Madame Kovarian to become a weapon against the Doctor and trained by the Silence to kill him. In 'Let's Kill Hitler', she regenerates into Alex Kingston after being shot as Mels. Instead of killing the Doctor as planned, she used her regenerative energy to resurrect him, losing all future regenerations in the process.

In Their Own Story

River first appears in the 2008 two-parter 'Silence in the Library' and 'Forest of the Dead', where she encounters the Tenth Doctor in the 51st century. She convinces him to trust her by whispering his real name, a secret he only divulges under rare circumstances. At the episode's end, she sacrifices herself to save trapped people, knocking out the Doctor before uploading her consciousness into the Library's computer via a sonic screwdriver given by his future self. Later, in 'The Time of Angels', she meets the Eleventh Doctor prior to becoming a professor, revealing she is imprisoned for killing 'the best man I've ever known.' In 'The Wedding of River Song', she refuses to kill the Doctor as history demands, creating an alternate reality until they marry and repair the timeline by faking his death. She regularly escapes Stormcage Prison using hallucinogenic lipstick to adventure with him.
