Fort Joy Prisoners

Sourcerers quarantined on Reaper's Eye, facing purging by the Magisters.

The Fort Joy Prisoners are the inmates detained on the island prison of Reaper's Eye at the start of Divinity: Original Sin II. These individuals are primarily Sourcerers, people born with the talent to manipulate a powerful energy known as Source. They have been captured by the Magisters, a faction of the Divine Order led by Bishop Alexandar and his Commander Dallis, who view them as threats due to their ability to attract Voidwoken. Transported to Fort Joy via the ship 'The Mercy', these prisoners face a brutal regime where they are frequently 'purged' of their Source, turning them into mindless husks.

Lore & Background

Fort Joy serves as a prison-town on the island previously inhabited by Braccus Rex, the late tyrannical ruler. It is run by the Magisters who are dedicated to capturing or killing all Sourcerers. The facility is characterized by its harsh treatment of inmates; prisoners are stripped of their Source and turned into mindless husks. The threat of these monsters has increased following the passing of Lucian, the former 'Divine', leading to intensified persecution. The Magisters, led by Bishop Alexandar—a Bishop of the Divine Order, not the new Divine—enforce this regime alongside Commander Dallis, who holds significant authority. The island itself was previously ruled by Braccus Rex, adding a layer of historical tyranny to the current oppression.

Reader's Guide

Players begin their journey as one of several characters captured and sent to Fort Joy on Reaper's Eye. The island serves as the starting point where players witness the Magisters' regime before escaping. While only six pre-made characters are available as companions on this first island, players can recruit up to three NPCs to assist them. These companions react to the player's actions and choices, influencing their like or dislike of the protagonist. Players must navigate the escape from Fort Joy, dealing with the Magisters' attempts to purge Source. The choices made here determine which companions survive and join the party as they sail away on the sentient ship, the Lady Vengeance.
