Factionless Underground
A shadow realm of outcasts hiding in Chicago's forgotten ruins.
The Factionless Underground refers to the hidden network of abandoned subway tunnels and ruined structures where individuals without a faction reside in Chicago. It serves as their sanctuary and strategic base during conflicts with established factions, particularly Dauntless and Erudite. While often mistaken for a singular location, it is actually a sprawling system of hideouts used by outcasts who failed initiation or renounced their allegiances. This network became a focal point of tension when former Dauntless leaders sought to rally these displaced citizens against the faction system.

Lore & Background
Citizens become Factionless when they fail the initiation process or voluntarily abandon their faction. Stripped of protection and resources, they are forced to live outside the protective walls that define the city. They scavenge for food and supplies in the dangerous zones between faction territories. Over time, these individuals organized into loose groups within the deepest parts of the subway system. This area became known as the Underground because it was largely unmapped by faction surveillance. It provided a place where they could plot without immediate interference from Dauntless or Erudite security forces. The significance of this territory grew when the Factionless, under the leadership of Evelyn Johnson-Eaton, used their numbers and knowledge of the tunnels to launch coordinated attacks against Dauntless leadership, turning a place of survival into a weaponized stronghold.
Reader's Guide
The Factionless Underground operates not as a magical tool, but as a critical strategic location within the dystopian city of Chicago. It functions as a hidden sanctuary and staging ground for those who have been cast out or chose to leave their assigned factions. Access is restricted to known members, utilizing knowledge of abandoned subway tunnels and ruined infrastructure that bypasses faction surveillance. Its primary limitation lies in its vulnerability; while concealed, the network lacks the resources and fortifications of official faction territories.
Food and supplies must be scavenged from the surface or stolen during raids on Dauntless compounds. Control over this territory fluctuates depending on leadership changes among the outcasts. Strategically, it serves as a base for insurgent operations against the ruling factions. During conflicts, forces mobilize from these depths to launch surprise attacks or hide fugitives seeking protection from Erudite surveillance.
Possession of this territory grants leverage in negotiations but also invites constant military retaliation from established groups.
