Moist von Lipwig

A reformed con-man who revived the Ankh-Morpork Post Office, revolutionized banking with paper money, and built railways across difficult terrain.

Moist von Lipwig is a fictional character and reformed con-man from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Born in Überwald, he left home after his father died and his mother remarried, becoming a traveling conman. He is described as having no notable physical traits, making him easily forgotten—a trait he sometimes exploits, though specific disguises like ear hair wigs are not from canon.

Lore & Background

In Going Postal, Lord Vetinari spared Moist's life on the condition he become Ankh-Morpork's Postmaster General. Moist restored the defunct postal service by applying con-artist principles to honest work, introducing postage stamps, and exposing the fraud of Reacher Gilt's Grand Trunk Clacks Company. In Making Money, after a bank chairwoman left her shares to her dog Mr Fusspot (who was then bequeathed to Moist), he was forced to run the Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork and the Royal Mint. He introduced paper money there while keeping control from the greedy Lavish family. By Raising Steam, Moist had married Adora Belle Dearheart, lived on Scoone Avenue, and led railway construction efforts including a line to Schmaltzberg, where authorized Umian golems helped build a bridge over the Wilinus Pass ravine.

Reader's Guide

Moist von Lipwig is defined by his transformation from an unreliable narrator and conman into a public servant. He is uncertain about his own age or whether he survived the breakup of the unholy empire. His lack of distinct physical features allows him to use disguises and aliases effectively. In Going Postal, he applies deception skills to honest work; in Making Money, he manages banks under threat from the Assassin's Guild if he refuses the job or harms Mr Fusspot; in Raising Steam, he oversees railway logistics. He is not a follower of any particular god but prays to Anoia after his con increased her popularity.

Did You Know?

Career Transformation and Business Acumen

Moist was recruited by Lord Vetinari under threat of execution to revive the Ankh-Morpork postal service, which had been rendered obsolete by the Grand Trunk Clacks Company. He reintroduced postage stamps and exposed Reacher Gilt's fraudulent practices, causing the company's downfall. By Making Money, he ran both the Royal Bank and the Royal Mint after inheriting the chairmanship via Mr Fusspot, introducing paper money and resisting the Lavish family's greed. At the end of that novel, it was suggested he might become Chief Tax Collector.

The Psychology of Risk and Personal Life

Moist needs dangerous thrills to feel alive; when Adora Belle Dearheart is away, he climbs high buildings or induces extreme sneezing fits. They met in Going Postal, became engaged by Making Money, and married before Raising Steam. They live in a mansion on Scoone Avenue near the Vimes family. While Moist runs the Post Office and Mint/Bank, Adora Belle runs the Clacks network as an equal-opportunity employer, hiring golems and goblins.

Strategic Ambiguity and Unreliable Narration

Moist is an unreliable narrator; his backstory includes uncertainty about his age and whether he lived through the breakup of the unholy empire. Descriptions of his height, appearance, and age vary between characters in Going Postal, which he exploits using disguises like fake glasses and ear hair wigs. Before capture, he used many aliases and was an expert forger. Even after becoming Postmaster General, he breaks into his own office just to keep things interesting.

Legacy and Cultural Impact

Moist is the protagonist of Going Postal, Making Money, and Raising Steam. He caused a massive increase in the popularity of the goddess Anoia through a con, leading him to pray to her out of debt. The Daily Telegraph listed him among the top ten Discworld characters in 2013. In Sky TV's adaptation of Going Postal, he was portrayed by Richard Coyle, who also narrates the Audible adaptations.
