Discovery and naming

The dinosaur Jaklapallisaurus was named in 2011 by Fernando E. Novas, Martin D. Ezcurra, Sankar Chatterjee, and Tharavat S. Kutty. Its name comes from the Indian town of Jaklapalli, near where the fossils were found. The species name originally given, asymmetrica, referred to the highly uneven shape of its astragalus bone when viewed from below. The main fossil, labeled ISI R274, was dug up from the Upper Maleri Formation in the Pranhita–Godavari Basin. It includes a possible front back vertebra, a tail vertebra, and parts of the right hind leg. Another partial right thigh bone, ISI R279, from the Lower Dharmaram Formation was once thought to belong to this dinosaur, but later studies showed that link was not strong. In 2023, the species name was changed to asymmetricus to match the masculine gender of the genus, following zoological naming rules. Jaklapallisaurus was found alongside the sauropodomorph Nambalia and two other early dinosaur relatives.
