History

The museum was first proposed in 1987 and opened in 1994 as the Dakota Dinosaur Museum. Its original exhibits featured skeletons and models from companies and artists in Utah, Texas, and North Dakota, with most artifacts donated by Larry and Alice League. In 2015, ownership of the fossil collection transferred to the City of Dickinson, leading to a reopening on May 17, 2016, as the Dinosaur Museum at Dickinson Museum Center. The museum was renamed Badlands Dinosaur Museum in 2017 as part of a complete overhaul. Since 2016, it has collected dinosaur fossils from the Judith River Formation of Montana, with many discoveries on display or visible in a public preparation lab.
