Birth of the Nephalem

Born of celestial and infernal blood to challenge the Eternal Conflict itself.

The Nephalem are a legendary race born from the forbidden union of Inarius, a High Angel, and Lilith, a demon of the Burning Hells. Possessing power that theoretically surpasses both their celestial and infernal parents, they were born after Inarius and Lilith fled the Eternal Conflict to create Sanctuary as a refuge. Over millennia, the Worldstone dampened their immense potential, reducing it to ordinary humanity, until its destruction removed that dampening effect—reawakening Nephalem power in certain individuals, not all of mankind.

Lore & Background

Centuries passed as the Worldstone was used to dampen the Nephalem bloodline, causing their abilities to recede into what became known as humanity. For ages, they remained unaware of their heritage, living as mortals subject to the periodic invasions of demons and angels alike. However, recent history has seen the dormant power return following the destruction of the Worldstone—not for all humanity, but for certain individuals who now reclaim their ancestral might.

Reader's Guide

The saga begins amidst the Eternal Conflict between the High Heavens and Burning Hells. Seeking refuge from this endless war, a renegade angel and a prime demon fled to create Sanctuary, a separate realm shielded by magic. Here they birthed children of immense potential, capable of surpassing their parents' power. However, fearing these offspring would destroy creation, the factions conspired to hide them. The Worldstone was manipulated to dampen this latent strength over generations. Consequently, the Nephalem faded into what became known as humanity, unaware of their true lineage for millennia. Centuries later, the Prime Evils sought to exploit this dormant bloodline again during the events of Diablo III. Through ancient rituals and the destruction of the Worldstone, the Nephalem power was forcibly reawakened within a chosen mortal. This resurgence allowed them to stand against the resurrected Prime Evil and the corrupting influence of Lilith. Ultimately, this era marked humanity's transition from passive descendants to active defenders capable of ending the Eternal Conflict once and for all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Nephalem considered a threat to the Eternal Conflict?

Their mixed blood grants them potential strength capable of ending the war between Heaven and Hell permanently. Because they surpass both sides, the Angiris Council and Burning Hells historically viewed them as an existential danger that needed suppression.

What happened to the Nephalem race over time?

Over millennia, their immense potential faded into ordinary humanity until a specific lineage was reawakened by external threats. This dormancy allowed them to survive without attracting immediate destruction from the Eternal Conflict participants.

Where were the Nephalem originally protected?

Inarius created Sanctuary as a hidden realm specifically to shield his creations from detection by Heaven and Hell. This isolation was crucial for ensuring their survival against forces that sought to destroy them upon discovery.

How did the Worldstone influence the Nephalem's history?

The artifact historically shielded Sanctuary from prying eyes, allowing the Nephalem bloodline to develop without interference. Its eventual destruction removed this protection, forcing the reawakened lineage to rely on their own innate power.
