Miami, Florida is the setting of the original Dexter series. Dexter Morgan works there as a bloodstain pattern analyst for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department while leading a secret life as a vigilante serial killer, and he was adopted as a child by the Miami police officer Harry Morgan.
Lore & Background
Although the series is set in Miami, many of its exterior scenes were filmed in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California. The sequels move away from the city: in Dexter: New Blood Dexter lives in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New York, posing as Jim Lindsay, and in Dexter: Resurrection he moves to New York and resumes killing.
