Plot
Dexter tails Hannah because he thinks she murdered her husband, but Harry points out there is no proof. Dexter wipes Hannah's DNA from the lab and says he was wrong, apologizing. He tells her his wife was killed, and she says her husband had a heart attack. Dexter looks into Beverly Grey, the last person who owned Hannah's house, and finds she just died. He also meets Sal Price, who wrote a true crime book about Wayne Randall and believes Hannah killed an abusive counselor. LaGuerta keeps looking into the Bay Harbor Butcher and whether he is tied to the Barrel Girls case. Debra calls Dexter to ask about missing case details and learns Lumen helped him; Dexter says she will not talk. Sal asks Debra out, and she says no at first but then agrees, wanting a change. Jamie and Angel talk about him buying a restaurant and retiring, which gives him a fresh goal. George gives Quinn $10,000 to drop the investigation, but Nadia talks him into returning it. Under pressure from Isaak, George forces Quinn to alter blood reports to clear Isaak and keep the cash, threatening to send Nadia to a Dubai sex club. When Nadia stops answering her phone, Quinn takes Isaak's blood sample out of the evidence room.
Reception
In its original American broadcast, "Do the Wrong Thing" was seen by an estimated 1.99 million household viewers with a 1.0 in the 18–49 demographics, a 13% decrease from the previous episode's 2.28 million viewers and 1.2 rating. The episode received positive reviews from critics. Matt Fowler of IGN gave it an 8.6 out of 10, praising that Dexter initially wanted to take Hannah down and noting the similarity to Dexter killing Trinity when he took her to Santa's Village. Joshua Alston of The A.V. Club gave a "B" grade, calling the episode a lull with solid moments but finding the writing beginning to feel contrived. Kevin Fitzpatrick of ScreenCrush described it as a midpoint lull with Isaak temporarily jailed and Dexter and Deb's relationship on ice, but a nice transition into the back half of the season. Richard Rys of Vulture suggested that the cure for Dexter's compulsions might be intimacy with Hannah. Katy Waldman of Slate wrote that the episode was about Hannah McKay's allure, danger, and the possibilities she opens for Dexter.
