Tom McCollum

Goaltender drafted 30th overall by Detroit in 2008.

Last updated

Thomas McCollum is an American professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for the Belfast Giants of the Elite Ice Hockey League. He was drafted 30th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the second goaltender selected that year. McCollum played major junior hockey for the Guelph Storm and Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League before beginning a professional career that included multiple stints with the Red Wings organization.

Background

McCollum began playing goalie as a mite when his team's goaltender quit; he switched from defense and took over in net at the next practice. He was drafted by the Guelph Storm in the OHL draft and chose to play major junior there over a Junior A team near his hometown, citing the challenge of the OHL and support from Guelph residents.

In his rookie season with the Storm, he was named an All-Star with five shutouts, a 2.39 goals-against average, and a .918 save percentage. He was nominated for OHL Goaltender of the Year and named the Storm's Academic Player of the Year. McCollum represented the United States at the 2009 World Junior Championships, finishing in fifth place.
