Playing career

Matt Lorito’s college hockey career started with the Brown University Brown Bears in the 2011-12 season. His freshman year was cut short by an injury that kept him out of the first eight games, but he still managed four goals and 13 assists over 24 appearances. That season, he earned ECAC Rookie of the Week honors after strong showings against Princeton and Quinnipiac. As a sophomore in 2012-13, Lorito broke out with 22 goals and 15 assists across 36 games, landing a spot on the Second Team All-ECAC. He led the Bears in scoring with 37 points, topped the team with eight power-play goals and three game-winners, and shared the lead with one shorthanded goal. His 37 points ranked sixth in the entire ECAC. During the 2013 ECAC tournament, Lorito was the Bears’ top scorer, putting up seven goals and two assists while riding a six-game goal streak. His efforts helped Brown reach the ECAC Championship for the first time since 1993, and he was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Tournament Team. In his junior season of 2013-14, Lorito wore an assistant captain’s letter and posted 10 goals and 19 assists. He finished third on the team in scoring with 29 points, tied for the team lead in assists and shorthanded goals. As a senior captain in 2014-15, he notched 11 goals and 12 assists, tying for the team lead in scoring with 23 points. A two-assist game against Princeton on February 20, 2015, made him the 24th player in Brown Bears history to reach the 100-point club. On March 13, 2015, the Albany Devils signed Lorito to an amateur tryout. He joined them for the tail end of the 2014-15 season, tallying three goals and nine assists in 11 games. In his first full pro season, 2015-16, Lorito led the Devils in scoring with 18 goals and 36 assists over 71 games. Among AHL rookies, he ranked sixth in points, tied for fourth in assists, tied for third in power-play assists (19), and third in power-play points (24).
