Kramer was born on June 24, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, and played college football for the University of Michigan, earning All-American honors as a two-way player. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 1957 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers, but after two seasons he was traded to the Detroit Lions, where he spent the majority of his career. A powerful blocker and reliable receiver, Kramer earned three Pro Bowl selections (1960, 1961, 1962) and was named First-Team All-Pro in 1962. He helped the Lions achieve consistent success in the early 1960s before retiring after the 1965 season.
