Central Kalahari Game Reserve
A vast Kalahari sanctuary of ancient dunes, fossil rivers, and enduring Bushmen heritage.
This reserve, founded in 1961, spans 52,800 km² and ranks as the globe's second-biggest game reserve.[1]
Geography and history
The San people (Bushmen) have inhabited these lands as nomadic hunters for thousands of years.[2] A nationwide hunting ban made their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle illegal, while private game ranches could offer hunting for tourists.[3] The landscape is predominantly level and softly rolling, featuring bushes, grasses, and sand dunes.[4] Salt pans appear in ancient river valleys; one example is Deception Valley, whose formation started roughly 16,000 years ago.[4]
By 1997, three-quarters of the San had been moved; after renewed forced removals in October 2005, only about 250 people remained living there permanently.[4] In 2014, the Ghaghoo diamond mine, run by Gem Diamonds, began operations in the reserve's southeastern part.[5] A large wildfire in September 2008 destroyed roughly 80% of the park; its cause is not known.[6]
