Flintoff made his Test debut in 1998 against South Africa at Trent Bridge. He was England's 'Man of the Series' in the 2005 Ashes and later served as both captain and vice-captain. He retired from Test cricket after the 2009 Ashes and from other forms in 2010. He came out of retirement in 2014 to play Twenty20 for Lancashire, then signed with Brisbane Heat for the 2014–15 Big Bash season. He also had a professional boxing match on 30 November 2012 in Manchester, beating Richard Dawson on points.

The floodlights at the Arun Jaitley Stadium hummed with that particular Delhi electricity—the kind that makes the air feel thick, charged, almost liquid. Flintoff stood at the crease, bat low, eyes locked on the bowler's run-up. The crowd noise was a wall of sound, a living thing pressing against the stands.
