Midland Athletic F.C.
Dublin railway works team that played two League of Ireland seasons.
Midland Athletic Football Club, an Irish association football side, was based in Dublin rather than the Midlands region its name suggests. During the 1920s the club competed in both the League of Ireland and the Leinster Senior League. It began as a works team for the Midland Great Western Railway in Dublin's Broadstone area, similar to other early League of Ireland clubs like St James's Gate, Jacobs, Fordsons, and Dundalk. The club marked its 50th anniversary with a golden jubilee dinner at Moran's Hotel in Dublin on 10 December 1955, an event recorded in a Dublin newspaper that featured a photograph of the 1909–10 team and officials.
Founded in 1904, Midland Athletic counted a young Joe Wickham among its founding members. Wickham played centre-half for the club and started his administrative career as its secretary. In the 1921–22 season the team played in the Leinster Senior League alongside Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians B, St James's Gate B, Bray Unknowns, Shelbourne United, Pioneers, Brooklyn, Merrion, Glasnevin, CYMS, and Richmond. When the League of Ireland expanded from eight to twelve teams for the 1922–23 season, Midland Athletic was one of six new entrants, joining Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne United, Pioneers, Athlone Town, and Rathmines Athletic after Frankfort and YMCA dropped out.
The club played its home matches at The Thatch in Whitehall, Dublin. Midland finished 9th in 1922–23 and 10th and last in 1923–24. They entered the FAI Cup in both seasons but lost in the first round each time to the eventual winners: Alton United in 1922–23 and Athlone Town in 1923–24. At the end of the 1923–24 season the club was not re-elected to the league and was replaced by Bray Unknowns.
Notable former players who represented Ireland or the Republic of Ireland at full international level include Tom Davis. Joe Wickham later became an FAI official.
