Richmond Renegades (SPHL)

The Richmond Renegades were a professional ice hockey team based in Richmond, Virginia, that played in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). The team began play in October 2006 at the Richmond Coliseum, replacing the United Hockey League Richmond RiverDogs, who relocated to suburban Chicago for the 2006–07 season. The Renegades were the second team with that name; the first was an ECHL team that played from 1990 to 2003.

Lore & Background
The Richmond Renegades were owned by Allan B. Harvie Jr., the founder of the former ECHL Renegades franchise. The team began play in October 2006 at the Richmond Coliseum. Their first head coach was John Brophy. After the Renegades lost in the first round of the 2007 playoffs, Brian Goudie replaced Brophy as head coach. The team ceased operations at the end of the 2008–09 SPHL season.

The Richmond Renegades represented a revival of a hockey brand in Richmond, following the earlier ECHL Renegades that operated from 1990 to 2003. The SPHL Renegades filled the void left by the Richmond RiverDogs, who moved to suburban Chicago to become the Chicago Hounds. The team played three seasons, from 2006–07 through 2008–09, before ceasing operations. Notable single-season team records through the 2007–08 season include Andre Gill's 33 goals, Dan Vandermeer's 57 assists and 70 points, and Doug Groenestege's 20 wins and 2 shutouts. The team's tenure was brief, but it continued the tradition of minor-league hockey in Richmond's Coliseum.
